Multilingual and multi-currency stores

Paddle for WooCommerce works with WPML and WooCommerce Multilingual & Multicurrency. Three settings make a store that sells in several languages and currencies charge the right amount, in the right currency, in the right language.

Set up a WPML store

All three settings are under WooCommerce → Settings → Payments → Paddle, except syncing, which is on the Products list.

  1. Set Pricing to Order total — charge what the order says and save. Paddle then charges the order total in the currency the customer chose. Why this matters.
  2. Sync every language. WPML keeps each translation as its own WooCommerce product, so each one needs its own Paddle product. Switch the admin language bar to each language in turn, select the products on the Products list and choose Sync with Paddle from Bulk actions.
  3. Set Checkout Language to Match the store language, so Paddle's checkout opens in the language the customer is browsing your store in, not their browser's language.

Use Order total on a multi-currency store

Catalog price charges the price synced to Paddle from each product, and that price is in your store's main currency. A currency switcher changes what the customer sees in your shop, but not what Paddle charges.

For example, on a store with Swiss francs as the main currency and euros as a second currency, a customer who sees 10,70 € in the cart is asked for CHF 10.00 in the Paddle checkout.

Order total sends Paddle the order's own lines, in the order's currency. The same customer is asked for €10.70, and the WooCommerce order is recorded as paid in euros. The currency stays the same whichever country the customer picks in the Paddle checkout; Paddle works out the tax for that country. Coupons, fees and shipping are billed too. See Order-total pricing.

You do not need to change any currency setting in your Paddle account for this.

What happens to translated products

  • Each language syncs to its own Paddle product. Since 2.1.2 the plugin tells WPML not to copy a product's Paddle IDs into its translations, so a translation never charges through the original language's Paddle product. In WPML's custom field settings these fields show as Don't translate, locked.
  • The Paddle tax category and billing settings stay the same in every language.
  • A product that has not been synced in a language cannot be paid for with Paddle in that language. If Paddle is missing at checkout on one language only, sync that language's products.

"Not yet supported" in WooCommerce Multilingual

When you add a currency in WooCommerce Multilingual's multicurrency settings, the Payment Gateways section lists Paddle as Not yet supported. That section is for taking payment in a different currency from the one the customer sees. You don't need it: with Order total, Paddle already charges in the customer's currency. The label does not stop Paddle from working.

Tested with WPML and WooCommerce Multilingual & Multicurrency, on a store with Swiss francs as the main currency and euros as a second currency. Other currency switchers have not been tested. If yours does not charge what you expect, email [email protected].
